Purple Sheep Consulting is dedicated to mentoring and coaching underrepresented groups, strongly emphasizing supporting Black women in career advancement and leadership.
Black women continue to face deep-rooted systemic barriers in the workplace, affecting both their earning potential and career progression. According to a Lean In and SurveyMonkey study, Black women in the U.S. earn only 58 cents for every $1 earned by a white male and 21% less than white women. This pay gap persists regardless of education, experience, or industry.
Beyond the wage gap, Black women encounter limited access to career advancement opportunities, fewer sponsorships from senior leaders, and a higher likelihood of workplace bias. Research also reveals that:
π 39% of Black womenβs work contributions are often overlooked or undervalued compared to their peers.
π Black women hold only 1.6% of senior leadership roles in corporate America, despite making up a significant portion of the workforce.
π Workplace bias and microaggressions remain major hurdles, impacting confidence, career mobility, and job satisfaction.
In recent years, the rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and economic shifts leading to workforce restructuring have further widened these disparities. As DEI programs face challenges, mentorship becomes even more critical in ensuring Black women receive the guidance, advocacy, and professional networks needed to thrive.
This is why mentorship isnβt just valuableβitβs essential. Through strong mentorship, Black women can gain strategic career insights, build powerful networks, and break down barriers to leadership and financial equity.
Black women often navigate workplaces where they are hypervisible when it comes to negative stereotypes yet invisible when it comes to leadership opportunities and career advancement. Black Women Who Mentor exists to close this gap, providing the essential resources, community, and strategic guidance that Black women need to thrive professionally and personally.
Our diverse mentorship network includes leaders from all races and genders committed to lifting and supporting Black women. We understand that finding a mentor isnβt always easyβmany Black women struggle to connect with individuals who can advocate for them in rooms they arenβt yet in. However, mentorship is more than just advice; itβs a transformative tool for career navigation, brand building, and business growth.
There is something uniquely powerful about being mentored by someone who understands the challenges you face every dayβfrom workplace bias and microaggressions to being the "only" in the room. A Black female mentor offers invaluable insight, lived experience, and career strategies that empower mentees to:
π Navigate pay negotiations with confidence
π Gain access to leadership opportunities
π Develop resilience in the face of workplace adversity
π Build networks that open doors to career-changing opportunities
Representation matters. When mentees see and connect with mentors who have successfully navigated these challenges, they gain the confidence and skills to break barriers and accelerate their career growth.
While our primary focus is on Black women and underrepresented groups, we welcome everyone committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive mentorship community. Now, more than ever, mentorship is critical in ensuring Black women have access to the tools, networks, and opportunities they need to succeed.
Letβs build together. Everyone is welcome! π
